Looking for the perfect idea for a weekend in the Tarn? That is exactly what Nico found one Wednesday evening in March when he sent a message to the group chat.
“I found a place in the Tarn. Villa for six, swimming pool, spa. Ascension weekend. Who’s in?”
In less than ten minutes, there were six “yeses” in the group chat. That is rare. Usually, someone always has something come up. But not this time. Six out of six.
Camille, Nico, Romain, Julie, Axel and Inès. Most of them had been friends since secondary school, although they were now scattered between Toulouse, Albi and Bordeaux. The kind of group that had been saying “we really need to meet up” for the past two years without ever actually managing to do it. This time, it was decided.
Friday Evening: The Villa
They arrived in two cars at around 4 pm. The villa they had booked at Domaine de la Durantie was spacious enough for six people and came with its own private heated swimming pool.
As soon as they stepped inside, Camille walked around the rooms without saying a word, then headed out onto the terrace. She looked across the grounds towards the forest beginning just beyond the Domaine. She turned to the others and said: “We’re coming back next year.”
They had not even unpacked their suitcases yet.
The evening unfolded naturally around the table on the terrace. Cheese, charcuterie and a bottle of Gaillac wine. Conversations picked up exactly where they had left off months earlier. That is the thing about old friendships: there is no need to make up for lost time. You simply pick up where you left off.
Saturday Morning: Trail Running and Gravel Riding with So Event
Saturday morning meant an early start for three of them. Nico, Romain and Axel had booked an outing with So Event, Domaine de la Durantie’s sport and outdoor activity partner.
So Event is run by Thomas, a qualified guide with a passion for outdoor activities. He offers cycling excursions – mountain biking, gravel, road cycling and electric bikes – as well as hiking and trail-running routes suitable for all levels. The idea is simple: discover the authentic landscapes of the Tarn from a different perspective, exploring the Grésigne Forest, rolling hills, characterful villages and unique viewpoints that you would never see from the main roads.
They had chosen a morning trail-running route. Two hours on the trails, with the first light of the morning spreading across the Tarn. Romain, who ran regularly, was slightly embarrassed to admit that he was out of breath. Axel had no problem admitting it. Nico stopped to take photos at every viewpoint while pretending he was not actually catching his breath.
Meanwhile, Camille, Julie and Inès had enjoyed breakfast on the terrace, spent an hour in the swimming pool and were finishing their coffee when the boys returned, red-faced and satisfied.
“You’re looking energetic,” Camille said, with the smile of someone who clearly knew she had made the right choice.
Saturday Afternoon: Vintage Solex Rides with Vintage Cyclomoteurs 81
The afternoon activity was Inès’s surprise, secretly booked and organised with the Domaine.
Vintage Cyclomoteurs 81 offers guided rides on vintage mopeds and Solex bikes, departing from Larroque and travelling between the Vère Valley and the Grésigne Forest. Two and a half hours on the road, passing through medieval bastide villages, along quiet country lanes and through the landscapes of the Tarn.
Six adults on vintage Solex bikes. The scene was perfect.
Julie had never ridden a motorised two-wheeler in her life. It took her seven minutes to get started. She was the first to arrive at every stop. Romain almost ended up in a ditch on a downhill stretch and later claimed it had been completely intentional. Nico took so many photos that he nearly dropped his phone three times.
The route took them to Castelnau-de-Montmiral, the medieval village just a few minutes from the Domaine and listed among the Most Beautiful Villages of France. They stopped in the arcaded square, had coffee on a terrace and bought some traditional croquants from a local shop. Their guide told them about the history of the village. Axel, who normally never listened to that sort of thing, was asking questions.
They returned to the Domaine in the late afternoon, their heads full of memories and their arms slightly sore after holding onto handlebars for two and a half hours.
The Spa & Wellness Centre
Back at the Domaine, nobody particularly felt like moving. It had already been a very full day.
That was when the Spa & Wellness Centre really came into its own. The spa at Domaine de la Durantie is entirely dedicated to genuine relaxation, with Lydia’s massages tailored to each guest and the peaceful surroundings of the spa itself. To book your wellness experience, simply contact the Domaine.
The second evening was the quieter of the two. Less noise, less excitement. Just six people feeling completely relaxed, sitting around a meal they had cooked together in the villa, while the swimming pool glowed in the darkness beyond the large windows.
Sunday: Before Heading Home
On Sunday morning, nobody wanted to leave. They took their time. Breakfast at JJ’s Bar & Bistro, one last swim and one final coffee on the terrace.
Nico said he had not slept that well in months. Julie said she had only looked at her phone once in three days – to take a photo of the sunset on Friday evening. Axel said nothing, but he had that look on his face: the look of someone who had completely switched off without even realising it.
They packed their bags slowly. Returned the key. Got back behind the wheel.
On the road home, Nico reopened the WhatsApp group chat. “Same villa, same weekend next year?”
Inès was the first to reply: “I’m booking it tonight.”
